Course Overview

Course curriculum emphasizes medical care of the sick and injured while working in the extreme environment that exists during a wildland fire incident. Scenario-based training is centered around utilizing the established incident management system and applying it to an all-hazards fire ground approach.

Course Objectives

• List the important differences between the wildland medical provider and the city medical provider.

• Describe why preplanning is a key factor to success when providing emergency medical services in the wildland environment.

• Describe the differences in medical capabilities between the various strike team assignments and the care provider’s need to understand how this will impact equipment, treatment and transportation of the injured or ill patient. 

• Understand the various environmental hazards and the natural phenomena of environmental events that pose risk for wildland public safety personnel.

• Apply personal risk management techniques to mitigate environmental hazards when responding to an environmental emergency on the wildfire suppression operations.

• Integrate the pathophysiological principles and the assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for the patient who has dehydration, heat exhaustion, or exertional heat stroke.

• Identify the indications for life-saving interventions including: applying tourniquets, airway maneuvers, needle decompression, splinting, and reductions.

• Identify an Incident Within an Incident.
